MacBook Pro 15-inch (2016) – Touch Bar Model

The 2016 MacBook Pro 15” introduced a complete redesign: thinner, lighter, and with an all-new Touch Bar replacing the function key row. It was also the first MacBook Pro to use only USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, removing traditional connectors like USB-A, HDMI, and MagSafe. Though controversial at launch, it was a powerful machine aimed at professionals who wanted a sleek, modern, and portable device.

🔹 Display
    •    15.4-inch Retina display (IPS LED)
    •    Resolution: 2880 × 1800 (~220 PPI)
    •    Brightness: 500 nits
    •    P3 wide color gamut + True Tone (added via later macOS update)

No ProMotion or HDR; still a sharp and vibrant display for its time.

🔹 CPU Options

All models use Intel 6th-gen (Skylake) quad-core CPUs:
    •    2.6GHz, 2.7GHz, or 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    •    Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
    •    16GB LPDDR3 RAM (2133 MHz), not upgradeable

🔹 Graphics (GPU)
    •    Radeon Pro 450 / 455 / 460 (2GB or 4GB GDDR5)
    •    Also includes Intel HD Graphics 530 for lower power tasks (automatic switching)

🔹 Storage Options
    •    PCIe-based SSD: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB

Very fast storage speeds for the time, non-upgradeable

🔹 Keyboard & Input
    •    2nd-gen Butterfly Keyboard (low-travel, flat key feel)
    •    Touch Bar with integrated Touch ID sensor
    •    Large Force Touch trackpad

⚠️ Keyboard was prone to reliability issues (sticky keys, double presses)

🔹 Ports
    •    4 x Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports
    •    3.5mm headphone jack

⚠️ No USB-A, SD card, MagSafe, or HDMI – dongles required for many users

🔹 Camera, Mics & Audio
    •    720p FaceTime HD camera
    •    Stereo speakers (high-fidelity for the time)
    •    Dual microphones

🔹 Battery & Charging
    •    76Wh lithium-polymer battery
    •    Up to 10 hours web browsing or iTunes playback
    •    Charged via USB-C

⚠️ USB-C charging is versatile, but many users missed MagSafe

🔹 Operating System
    •    Originally shipped with macOS Sierra
    •    Supports up to macOS Monterey (no Ventura or later)

Not compatible with macOS Ventura or newer due to Intel architecture limitations

✅ Why It Was Innovative
    •    First Mac with Touch Bar
    •    First Mac with all Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C)
    •    Thin and light 15” Pro at just 4.02 lbs (1.83 kg)
    •    Gorgeous Retina display with wide color
    •    High SSD performance and sleek design

⚠️ Common Drawbacks
    •    Butterfly keyboard (fragile and prone to failure)
    •    Touch Bar removed physical keys, polarizing to users
    •    No legacy ports (MagSafe, USB-A, HDMI, SD)
    •    Soldered RAM and storage
    •    Limited to 16GB RAM, even on maxed-out models
    •    No longer supported in latest macOS versions
